Step 1 - Learn MahJong
Our Level 1 course is designed for beginners who want to learn the fundamentals of American MahJong. This introductory class provides a strong foundation and helps new players understand how the game works before joining open play events.
Topics include:
Understanding the MahJong card
Learning tile categories and suits
The Charleston and tile exchange process
Basic game setup and etiquette
Building hands and identifying patterns
Calling tiles and game terminology
Scoring basics and winning a hand
By the end of your Level 1 Lesson, you'll have the confidence needed to sit down at a table and begin playing with others!
Step 2 - Guided Play
Level 2 Guided Play is designed for players who have completed Level 1 instruction and are ready to strengthen their understanding of the fundamentals of American Mahjong.
This session focuses on:
helping players become comfortable with game setup
executing the Charleston, reading the card
confidently navigating the flow of play.
Participants will receive hands-on guidance while playing, allowing them to practice essential skills in a supportive and encouraging environment. Instructors will review table setup, wall building, dealing procedures, Charleston exchanges, tile identification, and basic hand selection while answering questions throughout the game.
Level 4 - Mahjong Strategy & Drills
Once you've mastered the basics, Level 4 takes your understanding to the next level with Guided Play. This course focuses on strategy, decision-making, and developing the skills needed to become a stronger, more confident player.
Topics include:
Reading the card more effectively
Hand selection strategies
Defensive and offensive play
Tile efficiency and decision-making
Charleston strategy
Recognizing opportunities during play
Improving game awareness and confidence
Level 4 helps bridge the gap between learning the rules and truly understanding how to play the game strategically.
Level 5 - League Play
Level 5 is designed for experienced players who are ready to transition from social play to a more competitive league-style environment. This advanced guided play session focuses on improving game speed, sharpening decision-making skills, and developing the confidence needed to participate successfully in organized league play.
Players will learn techniques to evaluate hands more quickly, make efficient Charleston decisions, recognize strategic opportunities faster, and maintain the pace expected in league settings. Emphasis is placed on reducing downtime between games, improving table etiquette, keeping accurate scores, and completing approximately three games per hour.

Instructors will provide coaching and feedback to help players become more confident, competitive, and prepared for league and tournament-style play.
This class is ideal for players who are comfortable with the current National Mah Jongg League card, understand game mechanics, and are looking to elevate their skills in a structured, fast-paced environment.
